New Short-term Rental Regulations Become Effective Thursday, March 1

The Town of Vail’s new short-term rental regulations became effective on Thursday, March 1. The regulations were approved in December with a delayed implementation date to allow for property owners and managers to prepare for the changes and to create an administrative tracking and complaint system managed by the town. 

Key provisions of the adopted requirements include:

  • Short-term rental license required for each property to be renewed annually by owner; online application is available at

  • Courtesy notification of a duplex neighbors’ intent to short-term rent the adjoining unit

  • Acknowledgment of town life-safety, noise and parking regulations

  • Local property contact for emergency response

  • Posting of the rental’s physical address and other contact information within the interior of the rental unit

Short-term rental properties in Vail are defined as any rental less than 30 consecutive days. The new regulations approved unanimously by the Town Council include a self-compliance affidavit, “good neighbor” guidelines, complaint resolution requirements, sales tax remittance and a process for revocation of a license based upon three or more verified violations within a 12-month period. 

Along with enactment of the new regulations on March 1, Vail will be activating a hotline that will be available for community members to direct their complaints or concerns to a dedicated call center on a 24/7 basis. The hotline number is 970-331-0632, while concerns may also be submitted online at These outlets are being promoted as an alternative to calling the police department’s non-emergency number or 911 for issues such as parking, noise or trash.

The advocacy group Protect Our Winters released a report on February 23 that takes an extensive look at the economic contribution of skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling and how it is affected by low snow years. The introduction to the report calls it a work of hard science and economics with a simple message: "Winter is warming, snow is declining and that trend hits our communities in the wallet." The report's message is not only that winter sports are imperiled, but the entire mountain way of life is in decline. Colorado led the nation in economic contribution from skiing and snowmobiling. The study estimated ski resort operations generated more than 43,000 jobs and $2.56 billion in total economic value added in 2016. Skiing also is the catalyst that fuels indirect economic benefits to the lodging and restaurant industries. The report, which can be found online at POW's website here, enlivens the data and statistics with numerous case studies that show how mountain residents' lives are being affected or could be affected by changing winter.


The Vail Valley community is excited to announce Whistle Pig Vail, a summer-long music series that will bring a new era of headliner music at the iconic Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater in Vail, beginning in 2018. The 2018 Burton US Open Snowboarding Championships returns to Vail Mountain March 5-10. The best snowboarders in the world will be competing to win the most prestigious Halfpipe and Slopestyle titles in snowboarding. Spring Back to Vail is taking place over two weekends, kicking off with a free concert at Solaris on March 31 and ending with the World Pond Skimming Championships on April 15.
